On Lunar New Year, in rural areas of Phu Yen Hamlet, the local people normally organize Bai Choi festival. In this festival, the people construct 9 or 11 huts on a large place. The huts are constructed by different materials such as leaves, bamboo, coconut leaves… The person who controls Bai Choi Festival is a traditional artisan who is called “Anh hieu” and is required to learn by heart many traditional sentences and professional in flexible performance to attract the players.
Bai Choi Festival is a common traditional performance in South-Central Region in general and Phu Yen in particular.
Bai Choi festival and many other traditional games are performed in Tet and festivals which present the beauty of traditional culture and a indispensable demand in the spiritual life of Phu Yen people. Bai Choi Phu Yen (the traditional music and game) was recognized by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage and was recognized by UNESCO as the representative intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 7, 2017.
